Jobs: Careers

There is no set career path to being an orchestral manager and there are a variety of areas within orchestral management that you can work in, including:

· Concert and tours administration
· Orchestra management and librarians
· Education and community
· Marketing
· Development and sponsorship

There are also a variety of career paths in the wider music industry including:
· Artist Agents and Musician's Diary Services
· Venue management
· Festival management
· Music publishers and music copyright
· Broadcasting
· Recording companies
· National arts development organisations
· Local Authority arts departments

The ABO runs a careers seminar every autumn called Where Do I Start? which explores what is involved in being an orchestral manager and how you get into the industry.

When applying for your first job in the industry it is essential that you have some experience.  One of the main ways to acquire this is through volunteering, either by getting involved in a variety of management activities during further education and / or committing to an internship with an arts organisation.  The ABO manages a volunteer register that distributes information about opportunities available and current vacancies are listed on the jobs page.
