About the Member

The Hallé, Britain’s longest-established professional symphony orchestra, was founded in Manchester by the pianist and conductor Charles Hallé, and gave its first concert in the city’s Free Trade Hall in 1858. Following Hallé’s death in 1895, the Orchestra continued to develop a vibrant artistic life under the guidance of such distinguished figures as Hans Richter, Sir Hamilton Harty and Sir John Barbirolli. The Hallé remains one of Britain’s most highly regarded ensembles, enjoying an increasing national and international profile. Since 1996 it has presented around seventy concerts a year in its Manchester home, The Bridgewater Hall, as well as making over forty appearances around Britain and beyond.

Mark Elder CBE became the Hallé’s Music Director in 2000, and his appearances with the Orchestra continue to attract acclaim from both audiences and critics. His recently signed new contract will see him continuing his work with the Orchestra until the end of the decade.

Established in 1989, the Hallé’s award winning education programme now generates over 40 projects a year benefiting approximately 20,000 mainly young people. These include an annual series of concerts for schools entitled Hallé for Youth, school based curriculum projects often incorporating other art-forms, and large and small scale community projects.

The Hallé’s education programme complements the Hallé’s annual schedule of concerts and is central to the Orchestra’s artistic strategy.
