About the Member
English National Ballet is one of the world’s great ballet companies, with 67 dancers and an orchestra of 47 core members. The original 1950s vision for the Company – to take classical ballet of the highest quality to the widest geographical audience, at a price everyone can afford – remains the cornerstone of the Company’s philosophy today.
As a flagship company for the nation, English National Ballet presents an extensive touring schedule at home and abroad. By commissioning and acquiring new pieces, refurbishing existing works and encouraging new choreographers to work with our impeccably trained performers – we aim to maintain an original and popular repertoire for the nation. English National Ballet is one of the only ballet companies in Europe to tour with its own symphony orchestra. Many members of the orchestra are also involved with the Company’s Department of Learning programme, giving lecture demonstrations and facilitating music and dance workshops all over the country.
In 2008, English National Ballet will be premiering two productions. Strictly Gershwin, a dazzling celebration of George Gershwin and the sparkling age of Hollywood music and dance, with choreography by Derek Deane and Manon, arguably Kenneth MacMillan’s masterpiece, a ballet of passion, love and vanity.
