The London Philharmonic Orchestra performs music to the highest artistic standards for the broadest possible audience. The Orchestra thrives on musical partnerships with exceptional conductors and soloists and its live performances move and inspire audiences worldwide.

The Orchestra is committed to the future of live music and to innovation in all areas of its work. It reaches out to and welcomes in, the widest possible audience to its world-class performances.

Formed in 1932 by Sir Thomas Beecham, the London Philharmonic Orchestra has attracted an unrivalled series of Principal Conductors including Sir Adrian Boult, Sir John Pritchard, Bernard Haitink, Sir Georg Solti, Klaus Tennstedt and Kurt Masur. Vladimir Jurowski became Principal Conductor in September 2007 and Yannick Nézet-Séguin took up the position of Principal Guest Conductor in September 2008.

The London Philharmonic Orchestra is resident at Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall and performs about 40 concerts each season there from September to June. During the summer months, the Orchestra takes up its summer role in Sussex where it has been resident symphony orchestra at Glyndebourne Festival Opera for over 40 years. Since 2005, soloists from the Orchestra have performed six concerts music for small ensembles per year at London’s most prestigious chamber music venue, Wigmore Hall.

The Orchestra has made numerous tours to America, Europe and Japan and visited India, Hong Kong, Australia, North America, South America and Singapore. It was the first Western Orchestra to visit China in 1973, where it returned in 2004 for three concerts celebrating the New Year.

The Orchestra has also recorded the soundtracks for many feature films including Lawrence of Arabia, The Mission, Philadelphia, In the Name of the Father, East is East, Dogma, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy and Eastern Promises.

Innovative music education also plays a prominent part in the Orchestra's schedule. Schools' concerts, workshops with musicians and community projects work with all ages extend the London Philharmonic Orchestra family through a range of music-making.

The Orchestra launched its own live CD label in May 2005. The catalogue now includes a number of highly rated performances including a 5-cd set of archive Elgar performances to commemorate his 150th anniversary year, the benchmark recording of Tchaikovsky’s Manfred Symphony with Vladimir Jurowski, music by Mahler and Wagner conducted by Klaus Tennstedt, Shostakovich conducted by Kurt Masur, and 3 boxed sets documenting the Orchestra’s first 75 years with music by each of its principal conductors from Sir Thomas Beecham to Vladimir Jurowski.
